Asian Games in Doha
Chinese Taipei defeated India 2-1 to claim the women’s team tennis gold in the Asian Games competition at the Khalifa Internatonal tennis complex in Doha yesterday. In the doubles, the pair of C J Chuang and Hsieh Su Wei got the better of India’s Sania Mirza and Shikha Uberoi 7-6, 6-1, after both teams were locked 1-1 at the end of the singles matches.But in individual competition, Sania cruised her way through to the semifinals at the Doha Asian Games. She blitzed past her opponent Sania out-hit Suchanan Viratprasert of Thailand 6-3, 6-2 in just over an hour. Yesterday she defeated Mi Yoo of Korea in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 in quarterfinal.
Sania Mirza also won another match - her mixed Doubles encounter with Leander Paes. The Indian duo beat the Thai pair of Sonchat Ratiwatana & Montini Tangphong in straight sets. Leander & Sania took a little over an hour to beat the Thais in straight sets 6-4 & 6-3. The Indian pair are now through to the semi-finals of the Mixed doubles event of the Doha Asian Games, where they will meet the Chinese pair of Xin-yuan Yu & T Sun.
