Sania Ranked 44th

Sania Mirza’s ranking improved in both the singles and doubles WTA charts released today. Sania, who crashed out in the first round of last week’s Ordina Open, rose to 44th position in the singles list, while her doubles standing improved to 40th.

Sania was on the verge of breaking the top 30 as an 18-year-old after reaching the last 16 at the US Open but her recent progress has been hindered by a serious knee injury. She went nine weeks without hitting a ball after surgery and only returned to action at the French Open earlier this month, where she won her first-round match before coming up against eventual finalist Ana Ivanovic.

Mirza is keen to get back to Wimbledon, where she won the junior doubles title in 2003 and says the surface "suits my game". Sania opens her campaign at the All England Club against Russian Yaroslava Shvedova. The unfancied Russian had upset Sania at Bangalore Open and went on to take the crown but since then, Shvedova has done little and has struggled to maintain that standard. If Sania manages to cross the first hurdle, She will take on 11th Seeded Nadia Petrova, another Russian, in the second round.
