Sania in Stanford Semifinal

Sania overcame the challenge from the 8th seeded Austrian Sybille Bammer to enter the singles final at the Stanford Classic in California on Saturday. The Indian ace shocked Sybille 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 to set up a final showdown with top seed Anna Chakvetadze of Russia. Chakvetadze has a 2-0 record against Sania, including her semi-final victory in Cincinnati last week.

It was Sania's 3rd big victory this week, having beaten 4th-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland in the quarter-finals and 6th-seeded Tatiana Golovin of France before that.

Sania is also in sight of her third doubles title of the year after she and Shahar Peer of Israel stormed into the final. The third seeded Indo-Israel pair defeated the unseeded duo of Hsieh Su Wei (Chinese Taipei) and Alla Kudryavtseva (Russia) 6-3, 6-4 in the semi-final.

Stanford: Sania in Quarter Final

With a great show of power play, Sania Mirza breezed into the quarter-finals of the USD 600,000 Bank of West Classic tournament at Stanford, scoring an upset 6-4, 6-1 victory over French sixth seed Tatiana Golovin on Thursday.

The victory set up a quarter-final showdown with fourth seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, who registered a 7-5 6-2 win against Russian qualifier Yaroslava Shvedova. Sania had lost to in their two previous meetings but today's match belonged to Sania who completely dictated the game with her huge forehand and efficient service.

Yesterday, in her doubles match, 3rd seeds Sania and Shahar Peer survived a scare from Tatiana Poutchek and Anastasia Rodionova to advance to the doubles quarterfinals of the USD 600,000 Bank of West Classic tournament here. The Indo-Israeli pair came through 6-1, 0-6, 11-9 in over an hour against the unseeded Belarussian-Russian duo at the WTA Tour hard court event on Wednesday.

Sania and Peer will now be up against the Uzbek-German team of Akgul Amanmuradova and Angalika Bachmann. Sania, who is aiming for a second successive doubles title after her triumph in Cincinatti with Bethanie Mattek last week, and Peer failed to convert two breakpoints in the third set which saw them being broken thrice. But, Sania and Peer got their act together in the super-tiebreaker to advance to the quarters.

Sania in Cincinnati Quarter Final

Third-seeded Sania Mirza of India became the first quarterfinalist at $175000 Cincinnati Open or the WTA Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Varvara Lepchenko of Uzbekistan on Wednesday.

This victory marked the first time she has put together back-to-back victories since February. Mirza will make her third quarterfinals appearance in three visits to the Western & Southern Financial Group tournament. She lost last year to this year’s second seed and the 2005 champion, Patty Schnyder, and to seventh-seeded Akiko Morigami in 2005.

Sania now awaits the winner of the second-round match between ninth-seeded Jill Craybas of the United States and Olga Govortsova of Belarus.
Yesterday, Top seeds Sania and Bethanie Mettack cruised into the quarter-finals after a straight set win over the Colombian-Chinese pair of Catalina Castano and Meng Yuan.

Sania Moved Up to Rank 38

Sania Mirza's second round exit from the Wimbledon Grand Slam has not harmed her WTA Singles rankings. In fact, she has jumped six places to reach the 38th spot. Sania, who lost to 11th seed Russian Nadia Petrova in the women's singles, was at the 44th place going in to the Wimbledon.

She has also moved up two places in doubles rankings to be at 38. At Wimbledon, Sania and her Israeli partner Shahar Peer had reached the third round.

Earlier in mixed doubles, Indian duo of Sania and Mahesh Bhupathi suffered a second round defeat to Cara Black of Zimbabwe and Marcin Matkowski of Poland.
